Welcome to Paddle Prairie Metis Settlement

The 4 pillars that guide our success as a Metis Settlement.

As the human population exceeds the limits of biological resources everywhere and the race for quick profits pushes the boundaries of natural resource exploitation without limit or restraint on our traditional lands the need for ethical consultation is imperative now, more than ever. The Metis people must become stewards of our traditional land to ensure the connections to our way of life is preserved and that the environment around us is sustained, maintained and protected for all our people, now and for future generations to come.

Traditional Land Use

Traditional Land Use is defined as any area of land that is sacred to the Metis people for the purposes of a culturally significant activity or belief. These areas are important to document and record as they are primarily recognized through oral histories passed down from generation to generation and are steeped in the Metis connection to the land. It is of great importance to the Metis that these histories and traditions are not forgotten over the passage of time.

Consultation

The Consultation Coordinator is the main point of contact for all outside proponent business that will influence the Metis Settlement land, culture, membership and future. The primary role of the coordinator is to provide advice or mediate on all activities that involve future and current proponents including, yet not limited to meetings, deliberations and decisions.

About The Settlement

The Paddle Prairie Metis Settlement is one of the 8 Metis Settlements in Alberta. We are in the northwest corner of the province between the Peace River and the 6th meridian along the 27th baseline. The land base of the settlement is 429,671 acres, populated by a variety of wildlife and various species of boreal vegetation. The natural resources that are most commonly developed on the settlement are timber harvesting, natural gas production and farming. However, most recently we have developed several different solar projects on the settlement subsidizing the power consumption of our buildings. The largest being a 240 panel install at our water treatment plant and an 80 panel install at our community arena. The Paddle Prairie School has approximately 120 students from Carcajou, Keg River and Paddle Prairie offering both academic and CTS courses from ECS-Grade 12. The population of Paddle Prairie is approximately 800 with many more calling it home, as it is a community of families and memories. The traditional lands of Paddle Prairie are vast, and the community still practices many of the traditions today. Hunting is a primary source of food and a way of life for many community families. Other traditional uses include fishing, trapping, and gathering
